THE EUROPEAN LIGHTHOUSE AND LIGHTSHIP AWARD (ELLA) PROGRAM
LH Lyngvig (Denmark) photo by DE3EAR
This series of awards is issued by the Lights Hunters Group of the Brave Radio Friends. It is open to radio amateurs (OP) and listeners (on a heard basis) worldwide who fulfil the criteria given below:
1.The basis of the counting of points is the ARLHS list of lighthouses and lightships, as this is the most comprehensive list of lights available. The numbers are a combination of three letters followed by three numbers (e.g. FED 001, ERU 123 etc.).
2.To obtain one of the awards, you must have worked/heard the respective number of European lights and must be in possession of the QSL cards. All contacts must have been made from the same DXCC entity. Keep in mind that only European lights count! For the sake of these awards EA8 and EA9 as well as CT3 count for Europe.
3.There are no band, mode or time restrictions whatsoever.
4.You can only apply for a higher award class if you have applied for the lower one before, i.e. if you apply for ELLA Basic Class 2, you must be in possession of ELLA Basic Class 3. It is possible to apply for two awards in one application. All awards have a different picture.
5.Application must be made with a GCR list certified by two OP or SWL. The GCR list must include the ARLHS number of the light and must be in alphabetical order of the numbers.
6.The award fee for each award is: 5 Euros or 8 US-Dollars. It must be sent together with the application. Or apply for the awards by e-mail to get them as a pdf-file. Then there is no awards fee required. For ecological reasons we would prefer sending the awards digitally!
7.The ELLA committee distinguishes between European and non-European applicants. For European applicants there are different awards in steps of 50 lights, for applicants outside of Europe in steps of 25. For example, these are the three basic classes:
Class number of lights
European applicants non-European applicants
3 50 25
2 100 50
1 150 75
8.The applications must be sent together with the award fee to: DE3EAR, Hans-Jürgen Schmelzer, P.O. Box 1204, 95634 Tirschenreuth, Germany
or for the pdf-version to: [email protected]
9.After you have achieved the three basic award classes there are more awards (all with a different picture) for every additional 50 lights (for European stations) or every additional 25 lights (for DX stations). All the rules mentioned above apply to these awards, too.
10.All applicants that have achieved ELLA basic class 1 will automatically be offered honorary lifetime membership in the Brave Radio Friends, unless they explicitly wish not to be a member.
11.There are also different awards for lighthouse activators. There is no award fee for these awards, but applicants should enclose two US-Dollars for postage unless they wish to receive the awards as a pdf. The application should include a list of lighthouses activated with the date of activation.
